Equine Sports TherapyPhysical therapy has long been a foundation for human athletes. Competitors in sports ranging from football to gymnastics have utilized a variety of approaches to help maintain physical fitness and to assist in the recovery process when injury occurs to a joint, muscle, ligament, or tendon. When a top athlete gets injured, he/she would not be put on a couch for the next six months and be expected to start playing in the next game or event. The athlete would be advised to start physical therapy as soon as possible to not only start repairing the injured source, but to also maintain his/her physical condition.
Equine physical therapy is an integral part of the racing and sport horse world. Equine physical therapists and owners are using a number of modalities and techniques that range from simple stretching exercised to sophisticated laser and shockwave equipment. World class and Olympic riders rely on their veterinarians and equine physical therapist to assist in the maintenance and conditioning of their performance horses.
We can have the fastest, healthiest and best cared for horses around, and yes they can still injure themselves. Our goal is to keep them healthy, injury free, and competing at the highest capacity. With your horse being in top physical condition, should an injury arise, it will make a tremendous difference in the repairing of the injury. Time is of the essence when it comes to healing. There are many things you can do to help the healing process such as; supplements, icing, heat, therapeutic modalities and more. All these items will make the injury site stronger and have less chance of re-injuring the area again, but it does not change the necessary time frame needed for healing. We all know it’s hard when the veterinarian says 6 months off or more. It seems like an eternity. Use the six months wisely and work with your horse to help strengthen the injury site, if you don’t, you could look at a longer period of time should the injury happen again.
On our web site we will be giving you tips and resources to help you with the rehabilitation and conditioning process of your equine companion. Please note that it is important to speak with your veterinarian before starting any therapy programs. Should you have any questions feel free to contact us by email at info@equinesportstherapy.com
